As BETH dares to flee her abusive marriage, she encounters EMMA, a mysterious stranger. United in their need to escape the oppressive status quo, the women are drawn to a remote commune. Emma's supernatural gifts disrupt the natural world around them as well as the fragile balance of power within the commune itself. Beth must usher the group toward independence as they navigate the rigid control of their leader and the imminent military threat.
Transmission is a South African limited series directed by Liese Kuhn, blending elements of sci-fi, drama, and psychological mystery. Set in a remote town surrounded by vast, untamed veld, the series follows a woman escaping an abusive marriage and a deeply conservative community. Through its layered storytelling and multilingual performances, Transmission explores themes of gender-based violence, generational trauma, and the resurgence of feminine intuition as a form of resistance and survival.
The pilot episode of Transmission had its world premiere at the 2024 NYC Web Fest, where it was officially selected in competition. The series was made possible by the NFVF PESP grant and produced in partnership with Free Women Films, OYA Pictures, and Frikken Films.
