REBECCA is an evolving documentary project that began filming in early 2023. Originally conceived as a feature-length film, the project has since shifted form and will now unfold as a longitudinal series, following Rebecca Fox-Martin (24) over multiple years as she navigates new chapters of her life—including her recent move to a care home in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
The series intimately captures not only Rebecca’s personal growth but also the changing dynamics within the Fox-Martin family, each member reflecting on how life with a mid-level functioning autistic daughter and sister has shaped their identity and relationships. Set against the backdrop of early 2000s South Africa—where awareness and resources around autism were limited—the documentary aims to unpack outdated myths, overlooked narratives, and the day-to-day realities of living with mid- to low-functioning autism.
Director’s Note: As a filmmaker, my guiding principle is the adherence to informed consent and ethical storytelling—particularly when representing the mentally disabled community. I approach the process with care, transparency, and an observational lens, creating a safe space for the story to reveal itself without imposition.
While high-functioning autism has gained some visibility in mainstream media, stories like Rebecca’s remain underrepresented. This series is a step toward addressing that gap, providing an authentic, long-term view into the life of a young woman on the spectrum and offering a platform for broader understanding, empathy, and inclusion.
