The Lighter Years is a poetic visual short written and directed by Liese Kuhn, created for former creative studio Disko Lampie as an exploration of practical lighting within cinematic storytelling. Shot with intention and restraint, the film experiments with how light can be used not just for visibility, but as an emotional and narrative tool—shaping tone, rhythm, and atmosphere within a scene.
Starring Michelle Meyer, with cinematography, editing, and color by Duncan Walker, the short was crafted in collaboration with the Disko Lampie team. The film’s minimalism highlights the magic of in-camera lighting, made possible by a small, dedicated crew including 1st AC Sophie Hynch, and generous support from Big Bird Cinematography, Fabian Vettiger, and Nick Burton-Moore.
The Lighter Years is both a technical and creative study—an ode to the quiet power of light in visual storytelling.
